Introducing Josh Curnow...
Having played over a 1000 gigs as a solo artist in and around Europe, as well as making it through to the live semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent 2016, Josh Curnow is a Cornish treasure and fast becoming a big contender in the music industry for 2018! With his debut album currently in the making and top London officials awaiting its release, we quickly caught up with Josh and picked his brains about his love for music and Cornwall.
How long have you been singing for?
I’ve been a drummer and an electric guitar player since I can remember but I didn't start singing until I went to college. So I would have been around 16.
Where did your passion for singing come from?
I can honestly say that I never had a voice until I had to have one. I wasn't accepted into college as I left school without any real GCSE's, so one day I decided to go down there and (cutting a long story short) beg to be accepted, I was able to join a music course, but there was a catch... you had to join a band to be on the course and all of the positions were taken apart from singers. So I told the lecturer I could sing, not knowing if I could or couldn't! After 4 months of hard work and busking, I gained confidence, and our lecturer and head of the music department for Truro College said we were the best 1st year band he had ever heard in all his years of teaching... that's when my passion for singing began.
How many instruments do you play and what’s your favourite?
I play rhythm guitar and at a push can scrape through as a lead guitarist. I have recently been lucky enough to have received an endorsement from Boss, one of the most well known and multi-award winning company's in the world for guitar multi-FX pedals. I also play piano, drums and the dinner bell... I like food! But I probably get most satisfaction from drumming.
Biggest influences?
I'm a massive James Blunt fan, but also a big fan of metal, punk and even Beethoven. But my biggest hero is Bear Gyrlls... that guy’s a hero!
What’s the proudest moment of your career?
I think it's yet to come, but releasing my 1st EP "Me V You" was a really special moment for me.
What’s on your playlist at the moment?
Ok that's a little embarrassing as recently I took my Fiancé’s little boy to the cinema to watch the film "Moana" and our favourite song was "You’re welcome". So I have been learning the words to it and singing it to him at bed time for some late night giggles. He finds the word "coconuts" hilarious ha ha.
What’s your favourite song you’ve written, and why?
I'll be dead honest, I'm not a massive fan of my old material. It's not that I'm not proud of it, it's just not really me anymore. But if I had to choose, I would say ‘Lucid Dreams’ from my 1st EP. The reason being, is that it was my 1st single, and was also the 1st song to be sang back at me by a big group of supporters. It was also my 1st song to get air time on BBC Radio 1.
If you weren’t a singer/songwriter, what would you be doing?
Well, all I have ever known is being a musician, but if I had to hazard a guess, I think it would be in some sort of leadership skilled job. I love to help and lead people to better themselves. But realistically, I know exactly what I would be doing, and I still plan to do it one day. But for now, that information is top-secret!
Where are your favourite places in Cornwall?
My mum and dads house. My parents and family are my best friends and their fridge is always full.
Falmouth Bay Seafood Cafe in Truro is amazing for date nights and Wadebridge is my home town. Full of amazing people and amazing cafes.
Where do you go when you need to feel inspired?
My inspiration is very sporadic and I work so much better under pressure. It will just suddenly come to me, probably conjured up from an emotion and I just have to write it down on anything and everything! My bedroom wall was one that my dad wasn't too happy about, but I couldn't find a piece of paper, and I was forgetting the words... thank the lord for iPhones! I'm that close to "Notes” and "voice record" that we are practically related.
What is your top tip to unwind?
I love a quiet drive with lots of decaf coffee and food. That always chills me out.
What’s your ultimate holiday destination?
That's such a hard question as there are so many places I want to play and holiday in, so in no particular order; Rome, Dubai, the Maldives and obviously Vegas.
